’night, Mother
Written By Marsha Norman
Directed by Michael Hebler
One night. One decision. A lifetime left to understand why.
On an ordinary evening at home, Jessie Cates calmly tells her mother, Thelma, that before the night is over, she intends to end her life. What follows is an intimate, unflinching conversation between a mother desperate to change her daughter’s mind and a daughter determined, for perhaps the first time, to take complete control of her own life.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Marsha Norman’s ’night, Mother is a powerful two-character play about family, isolation, choice, and the things we believe we know about the people closest to us. As Jessie and Thelma move between everyday routines, painful memories, unexpected humor, anger, and love, decades of their relationship are brought into startling focus.
At once devastating and deeply human, ’night, Mother asks difficult questions without offering easy answers. Norman’s extraordinary writing transforms a seemingly ordinary conversation between a mother and daughter into a gripping exploration of communication, connection, and what it means to truly hear another person.
Directed by Michael Hebler, this intimate Alliance for the Arts production brings audiences face-to-face with one of the most acclaimed and challenging works of contemporary American theatre.
